Elections

  • On Thursday 3 May 2007 elections will take place for the Scottish Parliament and for South Ayrshire Council.
  • The Council, through its Chief Executive who is also the ‘Returning Officer’ for South Ayrshire, is responsible for running elections.
  • Polling places will be open from 7.00am until 10.00pm.
  • South Ayrshire residents who are qualified to vote should each receive a polling card through the post that will explain where to go to cast your vote.
  • A new election system will be used to elect your councillors. Instead of marking a cross [X] opposite the name of your chosen candidate, you should mark a number showing the preference you have for each candidate, [1, 2, 3, . . .]. This means that every vote you cast for each candidate will count towards the result.
  • South Ayrshire will be divided into eight new wards with either three or four councillors to be elected from each ward, making a total of 30 seats.
  • Details of all the candidates will be published before polling day.
  • The Scottish Parliament voting system will be the same as before, with a single vote, marked with a cross [x] for your chosen candidate for your own constituency, and for the South of Scotland Region.
  • Ballot papers for the Scottish Parliament will be counted first followed by the South Ayrshire Council count.
  • All the results will be announced on Friday 4 May 2007.
