Waste Managment

  • With the help and co-operation of residents we are trying to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in our landfill sites.
  • To reduce landfill, all 52,759 households in South Ayrshire now have new colour-coded waste collection bins or recycling sacks and black boxes.
  • In 2003/04, before the recycling system was introduced, the total amount of domestic waste recycled was 8.7%. In 2005/06 the amount we recycled was 35.8% - the second highest rate in Scotland.
  • We now send 30,000 tonnes less waste to landfill each year. This includes 53 tonnes of glass we collect each week.
  • Recycling information for all authorities throughout Scotland can be accessed on the internet at: www.sepa.org.uk/nws/data/returns.htm
  • Our recycling centres at Troon, Prestwick, Maybole and Girvan and our recycling points at various locations throughout South Ayrshire will take householders’ paper, glass, cans and other recyclable materials.
  • In 2005/6 we collected 69,415 tonnes of household waste at a cost of £42.20 per household. The average cost of collection in Scotland was £49.20 per household in 2004/5 so our refuse collection service provides good value for South Ayrshire Council Tax payers!
  • We offer each household a maximum of five free Special Uplifts each year, and aim to ensure we complete disposal within five working days. During 2005/06 we carried out 29,678 uplifts of which 78.65% were completed on time.
