Sports and Leisure

  • We offer a range of opportunities to join in sport and physical activity, to encourage people of all ages to have a healthy lifestyle.
  • In 2005/6, 206,000 people used our seven local activity centres for sports and leisure activities, 8% more than two years ago.
  • A further 302,000 people used the Citadel Leisure Centre in Ayr, with its “Genesis” state-of-the–art gym having 1700 members.
  • Building on this success, we opened new “Genesis” gyms at Prestwick and Troon Pools in 2005. These now have a membership of over 300.
  • Nine full time Active Primary School Co-ordinators have been appointed, to increase the opportunities for young people to join in physical activity.
  • Each week over 1,300 young people take part in our Football Development Programmes.
  • Our 2005 Summer Holiday Programme was held across 25 venues, introducing children to a variety of different sports and physical activities.
  • Our four swimming pools saw over 358,000 users in 2005/6, a figure 3% less than two years ago. However, our Learn to Swim Scheme is still proving popular, with 11,428 joining last year.
  • The Citadel Leisure Centre is the Scottish National Diving Development Centre. To date 250 people have joined the South Ayrshire Diving Programme.
  • Tea Dances and our “Class Diamonds” programme attracted more than 14,000 attendances last year, helping older people to stay active and socialise.
