Wildlife - Ayr Shorefront

Visitors to this area are spoilt by the number of different bird species they can see……over 190 species have been noted. Most of these are, of course, water and sea birds such as waders waterfowl and gulls. Also to be seen are sandpipers, turnstones, dunlins, lapwings and oystercatcher. In the summer flocks of up to 400 eider duck have gathered in Ayr bay. If you visit Doonfoot (south of Ayr town) you will see the extremely large roost of up to 30,000 birds, includes Iceland and glaucous gulls and sometimes the Mediterranean and ring-billed gulls.

In the sand dunes you will find bees, butterflies and hoverflies; as well as beetles and snails of various kinds.

For those who like searching through stones and rocks you are likely to find cockles, limpets periwinkles and barnacles
