Coastal Areas - Ballantrae Shorefront
Ballantrae shorefront is a beautiful area to visit, with
its mixture of tranquillity and ruggedness. To the north is
the harbour area, which was developed further in 1847 to form
the present structure. Ballantrae had a well-developed fishing
community in the past with by and fishermen and their families
at one time occupying all the cottages along the foreshore.
As with most of these small fishing towns and villages there
is no commercial fishing now based here, and all sailing is
limited to leisure sailing.
The beach is a mixture of sand and shingle, with to the south
an area that has been listed by Scottish Natural Heritage
as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (S.S.S.I.). The area
is noted for the shingle beach, which provides a habitat to
a wide range of coastal plant material, and as home to a breeding
colony of birds
