Parking in Ayr

Voucher Parking Scheme

The careful control of on-street parking in the town centre is considered to be a prerequisite for effective traffic management and the promotion of alternatives to the car. Following detailed consultation by Strathclyde Regional Council with local residents and businesses, Ayr Town Centre introduced an on-street parking strategy which consisted of a voucher parking system and was introduced in 1993. South Ayrshire Council wishes to continue with this ethos.

The aim of this is to:

  • Increase short stay on-street parking opportunities for shoppers and visitors;
  • Provide residents with improved on-street facilities by precluding all day commuters parking;
  • Encourage greater use of public transport, cycling and walking for travel to work;

Until then, motorists in Ayr had to compete for the limited on-street parking spaces and this caused severe parking problems.
