Parking Signs

Parking in Ayr

Introduction

Since 1992 the environment and management of Ayr town centre has changed dramatically as a central traffic management scheme has created a town centre perimeter road and a pedestrian priority 'core'. The introduction of the Ayr Town Centre Management Initiative (ATCMI) has also resulted in a clear focus on the centre as an entity which requires a mix of initiatives to increase it's attractiveness. Amongst the many factors which make the town an attractive shopping and leisure destination, the accessibility and ease of parking are vital.

The Ayr Town Centre Management Initiative implemented a parking strategy aimed at:

  • Using a Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) and pricing policy to
  • Encourage short-stay use of the town centre car parks and
  • Encourage long-stay use of the free car parks on the periphery of the town centre
  • Implementing a signing strategy directing parker's via chosen routes to a range of short and long-stay parking areas.

Ayr Town Centre has a number of off-street car parks and public on street parking, totaling some 5200 spaces in all. South Ayrshire Council is responsible for some 38% of the supply of paid parking in the town centre and controls some 51% of the total central area supply.
