How Maybole High street could look in future

A community garden, improved street layouts, and better facilities and services for young people are just some of the options being taken forward following the success of the recent Talk Maybole event in the South Ayrshire town.

Talk Maybole – delivered by David Thomson Partners on behalf of South Ayrshire Council – was based on the assumption that the Maybole by-pass was in place, removing some 95 per cent of the HGV traffic in the town.

This was designed to prompt discussion and help identify further improvements for this 'new' Maybole and focused on four areas of the town:

  • High Street
  • The Castle and surrounding area
  • Town Hall and surrounding area and
  • Greenside and rail station.

A number of themed workshops were also held to consider areas such as business, tourism, public services and public spaces.

The different events – involving almost 300 people – gave participants the chance to consider and have a direct say on how best the buildings and public spaces within Maybole could be used for the benefit of local people, visitors and communities.

Councillor Bill Grant, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, Tourism and Leisure, said: "Events like Talk Maybole are only as good as the people who come along and my thanks to everyone who took part. Special recognition goes to the over 100 young people who participated and made sure they had their say on the future of their town.

"It was really refreshing to hear how people thought the town could be improved for them once the issue of the HGV traffic had been dealt with through the provision of the by-pass, and it's certainly given us plenty of food for thought.

"All views and comments expressed during the event will be considered in developing a clear action plan that focuses on a vibrant and revitalised Maybole town centre that can be enjoyed by visitors and residents alike.

"And we'll be continuing the conversation that's now underway with partners and key organisations so that we all make sure we continue to talk up Maybole."

Mark Fletcher, Chair of Maybole Community Council, added: ''At the feedback session in Maybole Town Hall, the consultants gave some very good ideas and drawings of improvements that could be made to the Greenside, High Street and Castle area that could make a tremendous difference to the way local people and visitors perceive and use the town centre, making it more welcoming and safe.

"Of course, all of that is dependent on other factors including having a bypass and public bodies beginning the process of putting plans in place to make the required changes to prepare for the future. The Community Council will have a big job to do to work with South Ayrshire Council to make sure these ideas become plans that are costed, programmed and implemented over the next few years.''

A full report from the Talk Maybole event is currently being prepared by David Thomson Partners and will be used to help shape the future action plan.
