People across Girvan and South Carrick have the chance to win a year's free membership for the new £5 million Girvan and South Carrick leisure and community facility by entering a competition to name the new facility and design its logo.

The new facility – which is planned to open in 2016/17 – will make a big difference for local people and visitors, with a swimming pool, soft play area, gym, studio and café providing lots of fun for families and friends.

South Carrick Community Leisure and South Ayrshire Council want it to have an equally fun and exciting name created by the local community – and the competition to do just that is now underway.

Andrew Sinclair, Chair of South Carrick Community Leisure, said: "Our new facility is something that has very much been driven by the local community and it will only be a success with the support of local people, so their input to choosing the name and designing the logo is essential. We want a name that really stands out and puts across a strong message about what a great facility this will be and it made perfect sense to ask entrants to also design the logo – which is the visual representation of that name.

"This is a brilliant opportunity to be part of the project and, quite literally, put your mark on the new facility. I hope as many people as possible take the chance to get involved and I look forward to seeing all the entries."

Councillor Bill McIntosh, Leader of South Ayrshire Council, added: "Plans for the new facility are really moving on, and we're currently finalising the planning application which – once approved – will give the green light to getting the work started. It's a really exciting time for the project and this competition is just the latest stage in turning the plans into reality.

"People across Girvan and South Carrick know exactly what they want this new facility to provide, so I have no doubt that many of them will also have some great ideas on what it should be called. I encourage everyone to get involved in the competition and wish them all the best of luck!"

The competition is open to both children and adults who live or work in the Girvan and South Carrick area and all entries must be received by 5pm on Monday 14 September 2015.

Entries must be submitted on an official entry form and a judging panel – made up of representatives from South Carrick Community Leisure and South Ayrshire Council – will select a shortlist of entries. Shortlisted entrants will then get the opportunity to work with a professional graphic designer to finalise their idea before the winner is chosen.

The winner will receive a year's free membership at the new Girvan and South Carrick leisure and community facility.

Entries must be returned using one of the official entry boxes available in all Girvan and South Carrick schools, Girvan Customer Service Centre, Girvan Townhouse, Girvan Library, the Carrick Buildings, Carrick Gazette offices and locations in South Carrick villages. Alternatively, they can be submitted online here.

Full terms and conditions are available here,  on request from 0300 123 0900 or by writing to Girvan and South Carrick Design Competition, Girvan Customer Service Centre, 17-19 Knockcushan Street, Girvan KA26 9AG.

Andrew Sinclair said: "This is our facility for the people of Girvan and South Carrick, so let's make sure we give it a name it deserves. It's time to get creative!"
