The search to honour South Ayrshire's unsung heroes is now entering its final stages, with time running out to enter The Outstanding People Awards (TOPA). The annual awards ceremony, hosted by the Council, takes place at Ayr Racecourse later this year.

Public nominations are still open for categories including 'Outstanding Team' and 'Outstanding Employee', and people that have received exceptional service from South Ayrshire Council are being urged to step forward and let us know. This year, for the first time, the public are also being given the chance to nominate people in the 'Outstanding Young Person' and 'Outstanding Community Group' categories.

The Council has teamed up with the Ayrshire Post as media partner to promote the event which has been running since 2009.

Eileen Howat, Chief Executive at South Ayrshire Council, said she was expecting a last minute flurry of nominations, "We've had a great response so far, but we know there will be some people out there who have yet to come forward to make their case.

"We're committed to making our communities as good as they can be and recognising the contributions of our own staff, individuals, and groups in the community in improving peoples' lives, plays an important role in our wider work.

"We're hoping to attract a record number of nominations this year, and with time now running out  before nominations close, we hope to hear from as many of you as possible in the coming weeks."

In the six years the awards have been running almost 600 Council employees have been nominated for their outstanding service to South Ayrshire.

Kenny Smith, Editor of the Ayrshire Post said the time was right to get involved, "Every week we print the stories making the biggest impact on the community and I'm sure there are plenty of people that would be worthy winners of a TOPA award.

"We know from experience that our readers are passionate about their local area, so if you know someone who might fit the bill, tell the world about it and submit your nomination."

Nominations close on September 15th. The 2016 Outstanding People Awards Ceremony will take place on Thursday 17th November at Ayr Racecourse.
