South Ayrshire Provost Winifred Sloan joined pupils and staff from Southcraig Campus in Ayr at the Dam Park stadium to 'Smile a Mile' and raise funds for their school campus.

The pupils who have additional support needs took on the marathon task of walking one mile, four laps of the track, to raise funds for their new playground and to celebrate the amalgamation of Craigpark and Southpark schools.

Provost Sloan completed the walk with a group of students and afterwards said: "This was a really fun event and I enjoyed taking part. To see the excitement and joy in the students' faces when they were presented with a medal for completing the 'Smile a Mile' walk was tremendous.

"To walk a mile was a big challenge for these children and were truly inspiring and all determined to finish the walk."

The students were split into four groups, red, yellow, blue and green, with each of group accompanied by a pupil from Belmont Academy carrying a flag in their team colours. Children from Inclusion Squads in South Ayrshire schools and players from Ayr United also took part.

As each student passed the finishing line they were presented with a medal to mark the occasion.

Pupils from Gardenrose Primary School presented a cheque for £130 to Southcraig Campus money that they had raised themselves within the school to show support for pupils in the new campus.
