South Ayrshire Provost Winifred Sloan joined in the celebrations to mark the re-opening of the McKechnie Institue in Girvan following extensive renovation work, funded and carried out by South Ayrshire Council.

It was also the 120th anniversary of the McKechnie Institute and a Victoria exhibition was specially created to mark the event, so it was a double celebration.

Built by local merchant Thomas McKechnie, and opened to the public in 1888, the McKechnie Institute is a landmark in Girvan. It has seen many changes of use – library, home to Girvan Town Council, community facility and arts centre.

The Council has had the stonework at the Institute painstakingly repaired, the roof repaired, windows sorted and much more.

The building is now run by South Ayrshire Council as an arts centre and museum, it is supported by the Friends of the McKechnie who support and assist the Council to ensure that the building is the best it can be.
