Residents and businesses in Prestwick have an opportunity to have their say about proposed changes to town centre parking arrangements.
Parking in and around Prestwick town centre has been under review since 2013, when a detailed parking study was carried out, followed by extensive public consultation during 2014.
The review highlighted the requirement for residents' parking in and around Prestwick town centre and to support parking demands for retail, tourism and employment in the town.
Ayrshire Roads Alliance has considered the feedback and is now proposing a number of amendments to parking arrangements in and around the town centre.
These are as follows:
A new 3 hours limited waiting between 8.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Saturday in the following streets:
- Annfield Road
- Annfield Terrace
- Bank Street (west of Midton Road)
- Bridge Street
- Burnside Gardens
- Cochrane Place
- Kirk Street
- Midton Avenue
- Midton Road
- Oswald Drive
- Templerigg Street
- The Riggs
(This is in keeping with existing parking arrangements on Alexandra Avenue.)
A new 1 hour limited waiting between 8.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Saturday in the following streets:
- Hunter Street
- Leslie Terrace
- Queens Terrace
- Station Drive
- Station Road (at Regent Park frontage)
- St. Quivox Road (western end) – currently 3 hours parking to be reduced to 1 hour consistent with other streets immediately neighbouring Prestwick Main Street
This is in keeping with existing parking arrangements in Boyd Street, Gardiner Street, Kyle Street, Ladykirk Road, Salisbury Place and Station Road.
Introduction of parking permits for residents of all the above streets, to allow them to park without time restrictions.
There will be a charge of £45 per permit per year for permits, limited to two permits per residence. Residents in Main Street, Prestwick will be eligible to purchase a permit to park without limit of time in any of these restricted roads.
Councillor John McDowall, Chair of Ayrshire Shared Services Joint Committee welcomed this move. He said:
"We've known for some time that parking in Prestwick town centre has been a cause for concern, but I'm confident that these proposals will help to resolve the situation.
"As part of the review, local residents and businesses also highlighted the need to increase the parking time in Prestwick Main Street from one to two hours, to encourage shoppers and assist the local business community. We listened to these concerns and I am pleased to say that revised parking restrictions in Prestwick Main Street are now in place.
"We will closely monitor the new parking arrangements when they are in place, with the possibility of future adjustment and expansion as required."
