Issued on behalf of Eileen Howat, Counting Officer for the South Ayrshire voting area
There's just one week left for South Ayrshire voters to register to vote in the referendum on the United Kingdom's membership of the European Union, which takes place on Thursday 23 June 2016.
The referendum question is:
"Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?"
Voters can answer with:
- "Remain a member of the European Union"
- "Leave the European Union"
However, voting is only open to those who are registered to vote in the UK, are 18 or over on 23 June 2016 and are:
- a British or Irish citizen living in the UK
- a Commonwealth citizen living in the UK who has leave to remain in the UK or who does not require leave to remain in the UK
- a British citizen living overseas who has been registered to vote in the UK in the last 15 years.
Voters not already on the electoral roll need to register to vote by midnight on 7 June 2016 to vote in the EU Referendum.
It doesn't take long to register – voters can register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. Alternatively, they can download the Ayrshire voter registration app from the App Store or the Play Store.
The last day to apply for a new postal vote in the EU Referendum is 5pm on Wednesday 8 June 2016.
There will be two major issues of postal vote ballot papers for the EU Referendum – voters who expect to be away from home prior to the referendum should be aware of the expected issue dates when applying for a postal vote.
Any registered elector that currently holds a postal vote, or any registered elector that has submitted a postal vote application by Wednesday 25 May 2016 will receive their postal ballot pack between Friday 3 and Monday 6 June 2016.
Any registered elector that applies for a postal vote between Thursday 26 May and the deadline for postal vote applications on Wednesday 8 June 2016 will receive their postal ballot pack between Wednesday 15 and Friday 17 June 2016.
Voters who don't think they will be at home when the postal votes are being issued or may not be able to return it in time, can apply for a proxy vote, where someone will cast a vote on their behalf. The last day for new proxy applications is 5pm on Wednesday 15 June 2016.
Anyone who is an existing postal voter and wishes to change to a proxy voter, or a postal proxy voter, must do so by 5pm on Wednesday 8 June 2016.
Further information on registering to vote is available at www.aboutmyvote.co.uk, www.ayrshire-vjb.gov.uk, or by calling 01292 612221.
