New Invergarven School a step nearer

 23 February 2015  |

Moves to provide a new, bright, purpose built and inspirational learning environment for young people and staff at Invergarven School in Girvan have taken a step forward. South Ayrshire Council's Leadership Panel has agreed to consult with parents, carers and the wider community about relocating the school to the grounds of Girvan Academy.

Councillor Robin Reid, Resources and Performance Portfolio Holder for the Council said: "Following a fundamental review of the Council's school estate we recognised that Invergarven School was high on the list for an upgrade. Funding of £3.65 million has been allocated to meet the cost of a new building and following a consultation with all interested parties to relocate the school to the grounds of Girvan Academy."

Invergarven School and Girvan Academy have very strong links which are particularly important to the young people once they progress to living their adult lives in their local community.

There is land available within the grounds of Girvan Academy where a new school could be built. Informal talks with Girvan Academy and Invergarven Parent Councils, local elected members and school staff have already taken place and the idea was positively received.

Councillor Margaret Toner, Lifelong Learning Portfolio Holder for the Council said: "The education provision provided by staff at Invergarven School is outstanding, but they would really benefit from a new school building. We have high aspirations for all of our young people and that means the quality of the building will match the quality of the teaching and learning in Invergarven."

A document containing the proposals for the changes will now be issued for consultation in accordance with the Schools (Consultation) (Scotland) Act 2010 and made available to everyone with an interest in the school.

The consultation will run from 25 February 2015 to 24 April, will be advertised and letters will be sent out and further information can be obtained from information will shortly be available at

A report on the outcome of the consultation being submitted to the Council's Leadership Panel on 16 June 2015 for their consideration.
