What is small, lightweight and allows you to have hours of free fun and available from South Ayrshire Council libraries? A Playaway.
An audiobook and player all-in-one a Playaway is so easy to carry around because it is light and small. Despite the small size each Playaway comes preloaded with an entire story in digital sound quality so there is no need to carry an additional CD or DVD.
Councillor Margaret Toner, Economic Development, Tourism and Leisure Portfolio Holder said: "A Playaway is so convenient. You can listen to a good book while you are doing other things like hoovering, sewing, ironing or travelling on a bus or a train.
"If the phone rings or you get interrupted when listening, don't worry the Playaway has an automatic bookmark function so it will remember your place when it is turned off.
"I would encourage library users to try a Playaway and see how good they are."
A mix of both adult and children's titles are available, with new titles being added each month, so we are keen for library members to tell us what they would like to listen to.
South Ayrshire Provost Winifred Sloan, who was at Forehill Library with Councillor Toner, was enthusiastic about the Playaways she said: "The range of items available at our libraries is outstanding. These audiobooks mean that people can either choose to sit down and listen to a book, or do other tasks at the same time. The Playaways would also be very useful for children and adults who are visually impaired."
The Playaways were also a great hit when they were launched at Girvan Library. Local Councillor John McDowall said: "Some people simply prefer to listen to an audiobook rather than physically read a book, so this is great for them. For others who, for varied reasons cannot read books, the Playaway will be a real lifeline, enabling them to listen to their favourite authors, and to discover a few new ones."
The Playaways were highlighted to library users at special events at Forehill and Girvan libraries but the collection of audiobooks is also available at Alloway, Coylton, Prestwick and Troon libraries.
