People across the nation are limbering up to take part in activities to support Sport Relief and make a real difference to the lives of others. South Ayrshire is joining in the fun too and getting ready to get up and get active for a good cause.

A group of P7 Fisherton Primary School pupils, who are qualified sports Leader UK Young Leaders, have been putting their peers through their paces, getting them ready for the South Ayrshire Active Schools Mile challenge. This challenge will take place during Sport Relief weekend.

Every morning the children at Fisherton Primary School jog. So popular is it that some of the P7 pupils decide to become trainers and are now passing on their knowledge to others in their school. Some of the young runners are using the daily sessions to help them get ready to take part in the South Ayrshire event that will support Sport Relief.

A fun family event has been arranged by South Ayrshire Council's Active Schools Co-ordinators. It will take place on Sunday 21 March 2010 at Rozelle Estate in Ayr – the South Ayrshire Active Schools Mile. It costs £5 per adult and £2 per child to take part in the event and there is a free activity session afterwards. There will be something for everyone, tiny tots, mums, dads, friends and family.

Councillor Bill Grant went with local Councillors to Fisherton Primary to see the children going through their paces, he said: "It is very important that our children realise the benefits of exercising regularly and make it part of a healthy lifestyle. The pupils at Fisherton Primary School have certainly caught the jogging bug. The P7 pupils who are putting others through their paces are a credit to the school.

"Sport Relief unites people of all ages to get active, raise cash and change the lives of people across the United Kingdom and the world's poorest countries. I am sure that many people from across South Ayrshire will have fun while helping others."

At 11 am people will be able to take part in either a 3 mile or a 6 mile challenge route through the grounds of Rozelle Estate. By taking part many people will raise money for Sport Relief through sponsorship, or will simply take part to show their support.

At noon young children will be able to complete a mile long course and be part of the exciting event.

That afternoon a total of 20 sports clubs and organisations will be on hand to tell people more about their particular physical activity, how to get involved and a chance to ask questions.

Ian Rodger a P7 coach said "I enjoy delivering sessions and helping everyone else get fit." Kaylum O'Neill P7 a fellow coach said: "I like creating sessions of my own and delivering them to support everyone else in the school."
