Surfing on the sand, feeling the power of the wind propelling you along the Low Green, leaping to the sky from the sea all part of the fun of kite surfing.

The Low Green and Ayr beach are the place to be on 17 and 19 September when kite surfers will gather for Kiteival, the British Kite Surfing Championships 2010.

This will be the first time that South Ayrshire Council has had an opportunity to provide the venue for the Championships of the fastest growing watersport, with Ayr being the only Scottish date on the calendar. The event will be supported by the Council and ScottishPower Renewables.

The top professional men and women will be heading to Ayr to compete for the United Kingdom title in three different kite sports – kite landboarding, kite buggying and kite surfing.

Spectators will be able to enjoy the thrills and spills of the exciting sport for free, with the best in the business demonstrating how skilful they are at their sport. Members of the public will also have an opportunity to 'come and try' the sport for free.

Councillor Margaret Toner, Economic Development, Tourism and Leisure Portfolio Holder said: "Kiteival the British Kite Surfing Championships is the headline event of Sportember, a brand new festival of sport in South Ayrshire that will celebrate the best of sport in Ayrshire throughout the whole month.

"Whether it is taking place on land or in the water kite surfing is an exciting sport to watch. I am positive that many local people and visitors who go to the event will be inspired to take up kite surfing or think about joining in some other form of watersports.

"We are thrilled Ayr has been selected to host the Kiteival Championships. It will help us to put our golden beaches and surrounding area firmly on the kite surfing map."

Steven Lindsay, Community Relations Officer for ScottishPower Renewables who is sponsoring the event said: "We are extremely pleased to be sponsoring this event and to be continuing our support of initiatives and events in South Ayrshire.

"Supporting communities is a key aim of all our developments and with four projects in the area we hope to continue working with many more local people and initiatives."

The Sportember programme is varied with everything from marathon running to racket sports and cycling to golf, a 'come and try' racket sports event and for the more adventurous there is even a chance to try out firewalking. As if that wasn't enough the William Hill (Ayr) Gold Cup a major racing calendar event will take place. The River Ayr Way Challenge will see marathon runners enjoying running through glorious South Ayrshire scenery. So there is no excuse get up and get active in Sportember 2010 there are events running throughout the month.

Holly Kennedy, a professional Kitesurfer from Troon, who set the new world record for skymasters world highjump kitesurfing earlier this year, paid a visit to Ayr beach prior to the Kiteival event to tell everyone about the thrills of kitesurfing.
