An exciting celebration event marked the success of South Ayrshire council's Junior Road Safety officers- pupils who promote road safety in their schools.

Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) Emme Knowles, Lee McClymont, Shannon White and Atlanta Wilson from Girvan Primary School have won the JRSO's Poetry X-Factor Champion 2010.

The winning team of JRSOs, and their peers across South Ayrshire, have been promoting road safety in their schools, involving fellow pupils in competitions, running school assemblies, designing and maintaining a JRSO notice board and organising other fun activities.

As a thank you to all South Ayrshire JRSO's for their hard work a Celebration of Success event was held at Ayr Town Hall. Pupils from schools who have JRSO's were asked to submit poetry entries on the theme of road safety. The best ten entries were asked to read their poems with the hope of becoming crowned JRSO Poetry X-Factor Champion 2010 and having their winning poem printed in the next Road Safety newsletter.

JRSO's from Kingcase Primary performed a play on the theme of road safety that included their ideas and great events carried out by them and other JRSO's in schools.

The day ended with the first ever JRSO Mastermind. The finalists were Ballantrae, Fisherton, Holmston and St Ninian's Primary Schools. Each school representative was asked a range of questions relating to road safety with each school having a specialty road safety subject to answer. After a close fought final the eventual winners were Bethany Black and Logan Richardson from Holmston Primary who were the first winners of the JRSO achievement shield.

All the pupils and JRSO co-ordinators were issued with certificates in recognition of the valuable job they do within their schools.

Councillor Peter Convery, Sustainability and Environment Portfolio Holder said: "The Celebration of Success day brought all these dedicated young people together and gave them a chance to meet likeminded people.

"Congratulations to everyone who won one of the competitions, however, I would like to thank every JRSO, they all do an outstanding job educating their peers about road safety. I am sure that they will inspire other pupils in their schools to become a JRSO in the future."
