Having a ball! Pupils of all ages from Carrick Academy and Marr College and clearly having fun as they take part in the Schools of Rugby initiative.
South Ayrshire's first ever 'schools of rugby' have signed up to Scottish Rugby and the Scottish Government's ambitious initiative to put rugby at the centre of the sports curriculum.
Carrick Academy and Marr College join 16 other schools across Scotland, as part of the Schools of Rugby initiative launched this month.
Funded by CashBack for Communities, the Schools of Rugby programme will benefit from approximately £250,000 from the seized proceeds of crime each year and will offer a catalyst to motivate and develop the pupils in the sport.
It will also aim to create an environment where sport makes a significant contribution to the delivery of the Curriculum for Excellence, playing a central role in the life of the local school.
Scottish Rugby's Head of Community Rugby, Colin Thomson said: "Scottish Rugby believes that school sport plays an important role in the education of youngsters.
"Through the Schools of Rugby initiative we aim to develop youngsters into confident and competent individuals, showing the positive impact sport has on them and on the school communities they come from.
"Carrick Academy and Marr College both made successful and strong applications to the programme, along with sixteen other schools in Scotland, all of varying playing levels and all committed to establishing and developing this initiative in their school community.
"We are passionate that, by working with the education sector and the selected schools, we will demonstrate the educational benefits of rugby to young people and their communities."
Gordon Brown, sports teacher from Carrick Academy agreed, adding: "Carrick Academy is recognised as one of the best performing local authority rugby schools in Scotland and this money will allow us to further develop our goal at competing near or at the top of inter-schools rugby across Scotland.
"Thanks to the CashBack funding, the schools will be supported with a package of resources enabling more staff to deliver a thriving rugby programme, including a focused curricular programme for a number of S1 pupils.
"We have a well established commitment to developing excellence in rugby and we're very proud of our sporting heritage."
Angus Swan, Rugby Coach at Marr College said: "We're delighted to be taking part in this initiative which will provide a context for learning inside and outside of the classroom, allowing all pupils to experience rugby, improve their fitness and literacy.
"This contributes to an enhanced educational experience in the College, which is of great benefit to pupils, broadening their horizons and offering skills, such as teamwork, co-operation and leadership, essential to success in the modern world.
The broad rugby programme consists of rugby teams at all ages, opportunities for the development of girls' teams and non-playing opportunities for senior pupils, in rugby coaching, refereeing, volunteering and running sport in local primary schools and rugby clubs.
Quality Meat Scotland, Official Sponsor to Scottish Rugby, will also be working in partnership with the Schools of Rugby to deliver nutritional workshops supported by professional players from Glasgow Warriors.
Scottish Government Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport, Shona Robison, said: "A number of the Scotland team currently at the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand have learned and developed their skills and passion for rugby from within the state school sector, and they are the main beneficiaries of the current round of funding from CashBack.
"This support from the initiative for Schools of Rugby is therefore supporting the next wave of aspiring young players, by providing them with improved support to encourage their future opportunities."
Councillor Margaret Toner, Portfolio Holder with responsibility for sport said: "I'm pleased Carrick Academy and Marr College have joined the Schools of Rugby programme and am pleased cash from crime is being used productively for worthwhile and educational initiatives.
"South Ayrshire has a proud sporting pedigree, from golf to bowls and football to equestrianism and I'm certain this valuable rugby project will see our talented youngsters, boys and girls, take part in and succeed at this exciting game.
"The Rugby World Cup has just finished and, who knows, with this cash injection, we may well see Scotland lift the trophy in 2015 and maybe, just maybe pupils from Marr or Carrick might make the squad?"
