Ebooks Winging Their Way To Readers

Almost 500 ebooks and audiobooks have been downloaded by South Ayrshire Library users since the free service was launched on 1 July.

Of the 493 titles checked out, the most popular ebooks have been Firefighter by Chris Ryan, Genesis by Karin Slaughter, The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown, The Gates of Rome by Conn Iggulden. Topping the favourites list in audiobooks have been Witch Hunt by Ian Rankin, Honeymoon by James Patterson, Big Girl by Danielle Steele and Cross by James Patterson. James Patterson also holds the title for the most requested book on the ebooks waiting list for his novel, Honeymoon.

Ebooks which are available as full text electronic versions of published titles, audiobooks are downloadable publications that you can read or listen to on a home computer, laptop, mobile phone, ebook reader, iPod, iPhone, MP3 player or burn to CD, giving you access to your favourite reads anytime and anywhere.

Up to four titles can be borrowed at any one time for up to 21 days and they are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week from the South Ayrshire libraries website. All you have to do is browse the titles, check out the one you want, download it and then enjoy.

If the book you want is checked out by another user, you can add it to your wish list and you will receive an email when it becomes available. Information is included with each title to explain the compatible formats on which it will play.

Councillor Margaret Toner, Economic Development, Tourism and Leisure Portfolio Holder for the Council said: "I am very proud South Ayrshire Council was the first Council in Scotland to offer a free downloadable library ebooks service and it's already proving to be a terrific success.

"Demand for this service has been extraordinary and it appears to be growing day by day. In fact it is such a hit with library members and readers have even been known to download ebooks at 3 am.

"We currently have around 200 of the most current and popular titles for adults and children in fiction and non-fiction and will be expanding our stock to keep it up to date. If you commute every day by bus or train, what better way to pass the time than by listening to the works of your favourite author or discovering a new one? This exciting new service offers something for everyone and I'm sure it will continue to grow from strength to strength."
