Doors Open Day Ayrshire on 3 and 4 September 2011 is an opportunity to visit up to 70 of Ayrshire's finest buildings including castles, churches, townhouses, museums towers, libraries and council headquarters.

Doors Open Day in Ayrshire is organised by volunteers from the Kyle and Carrick Civic Society, with help from other voluntary groups and support from the three Ayrshire local authorities.

Since being established in 1967 members of the Kyle and Carrick Civic Society have campaigned to protect and improve the environment.  Members have a particular interest in the conservation of historic buildings, protecting open spaces, improving public transport and encouraging people to reside in town centres.

Doors Open Day Ayrshire includes a number of fascinating events sponsored by Ayr Townscape Heritage Initiative, from a cup of tea up a tower to a chilling spell in a cell. This year's programme of events can be found at www.ayrthi.org.uk.

Michael Hitchon, President of Kyle and Carrick Civic Society said:  "I would like to thank everyone who has so eagerly agreed to open up their buildings so that they can be enjoyed by so many people.

"It is important everyone knows that many historic buildings are used to deliver public services, they lie at the heart of our communities and can be real workhorses as well as being pleasing to the eye. We are grateful to the councils of North, East and South Ayrshire for financial support."

South Ayrshire Provost Winifred Sloan said:  "This is a great opportunity for people to get out and about and explore many buildings that are only occasionally open to the public or to get into others buildings for free where there would be an entry charge.

"We have so many wonderful buildings in South Ayrshire and across the rest of Ayrshire spanning vast historical periods that are all in their own ways significant examples of the rich tapestry of architecture and heritage across Ayrshire.

"This event is a chance to get closer to your heritage and learn more about buildings in Ayrshire."
