Councillor Saxton joins the team to celebrate their success
Annual figures published by the Registrar General for Scotland reveal that South Ayrshire Council has one of the most accurate registration services in Scotland. The Council's service has been confirmed as the second top performing registration service in the country, achieving an accuracy rate of 99.61% during 2014, which exceeds the Scottish average of 98.31% and puts us just 0.01% behind East Dunbartonshire Council on top spot.
Last year, our registration team registered 1,029 births, 1,456 deaths, and carried out 862 marriage ceremonies and 5 civil partnerships. These are significant life events and it's important that all the details are captured accurately as the information feeds into statistics produced by the National Records of Scotland which compiles details of households, adoptions and life expectancy.
Accurate information is also important for family history research and is vital when combating sham marriages and fraud.
Councillor Philip Saxton, South Ayrshire Council's Housing and Customer Services Portfolio Holder said: "The information our registrars gather together is taken from life changing moments and I am glad our accuracy levels are so high. The report highlights the fantastic work that our registrars have undertaken. The team has not been operating at full capacity, and despite this, they have still managed to achieve the second highest accuracy rating in Scotland.
"It is testimony to the experience of our registrars that our accuracy levels are so high despite them often working under difficult and emotional circumstances. I am sure the team will continue to build on this success."
