Children from across South Ayrshire will have a much better Christmas this year thanks to the generosity of Council staff and a new project called the Giving Tree.
The project means children who may not receive any presents this Christmas will now have gifts to unwrap on the special day. Giving Trees were placed across various Council buildings and labels were attached containing a child's name and age. Staff then took a label from the tree, bought and wrapped a gift for the child before returning it back to the tree with its label attached.
Employees rushed to get a label and all 345 were taken within a few days. Then the gifts came flooding in! They came in all shapes and sizes and a room was used to store the festive gifts until they could be sorted and delivered to the families in time for Christmas.
Eileen Howat, Chief Executive at South Ayrshire Council said: "The festive season is a time for giving and I would like to thank everyone who bought a present to brighten up a local child's Christmas. I am delighted that staff embraced the project so enthusiastically and am hopeful we can run the project again next year and help make Christmas a magical time for even more children".
