Flames destroyed new play equipment at Belleisle Park in Ayr

South Ayrshire Council is encouraging anyone who has information about the vandals who set fire to new play equipment at Belleisle Park in Ayr, only weeks after it was officially opened, to help us. If you know who was responsible for this thoughtless act then let the police know.

The play area which is designed to be multi-generational, inclusive and sympathetic to the park surrounding, is part of a multi million pound investment to transform the park.

South Ayrshire Council worked closely with the local community to reflect their ideas and created a park so that everyone, regardless of age or disability could use it.

Councillor John McDowall, Environment and Sustainability Portfolio Holder for South Ayrshire Council said: "It is heartbreaking to see such damage, it takes away from all the hard work and investment that has been put into creating the play area.

"It is an utter disgrace what has happened and I am outraged, as are many other people, that mindless vandals could set fire to the play equipment at Belleisle Park.

"In the few weeks it has been opened the play park has brought a lot of enjoyment to children and adults who have loved using the equipment.

"As a Council we are working in partnership with others to regenerate Belleisle and improve the facilities for local people and visitors to the area.

"I would ask anyone who has information about who started this fire and ruined the equipment to contact their local police."

Funding to create the new play area came from Heritage Lottery Funding and Legacy 2014 Active Places Fund.

Many people took to social media to declare their disbelief that the play equipment had been set on fire.

Anyone who has any information about the people who committed this act of vandalism should contact the police.
