Andrew Sinclair has stepped down as Chair of SCCL

South Ayrshire Council and South Carrick Community Leisure (SCCL) have today (20 June) paid tribute to Andrew Sinclair, who has stepped down from his role as Chair of SCCL in order to devote more time to his family and his extensive charitable work abroad.

Andrew has been at the helm of the community's contribution to the project to deliver the recently-named, 'The Quay Zone', since 2011.

With construction work progressing well and the new leisure and community centre set to open early next year, he has taken the decision to stand down both as Chair of SCCL and a member of the board – giving the board and a new Chair the chance to put their mark on the operational plans and running of The Quay Zone before it opens March 2017.

Andrew said: "I have worked tirelessly over the last five years to ensure the people of Girvan and South Carrick will have access to the quality leisure and community facilities they deserve. I am so proud of what we have achieved and I am indebted to the local community, the Council and all our funding partners for helping make this happen.

"It has been a real privilege to lead SCCL. With the project in such a good place, and continually growing demand for the charitable work I'm involved with setting up dental clinics in Uganda and Cambodia, it seemed like the ideal time to step down.

"This gives the board a chance to appoint a new Chair and allow them time to settle in as we move closer to The Quay Zone opening and SCCL stepping into its new role as the operator of the centre. It's a really exciting time for the project, a great opportunity for whoever takes on the role and the start of a brand-new chapter for SCCL.

"My time with SCCL will always have a special place in my heart. I'll continue to follow its progress closely and I'm sure to be one of the first customers through the door when The Quay Zone opens in March!"

Claire Monaghan, South Ayrshire Council's Head of Communities, said: "Andrew has been a major force in bringing this project to fruition and he has been a terrific ambassador not just for Girvan, but for the whole of South Carrick.

"While we're disappointed to lose his invaluable input, we fully appreciate that he has other commitments that require his time and energy.

"Andrew can take real pride in the fact that his efforts will create a legacy for the people and communities of Girvan and South Carrick for years to come. And his charitable work will create a legacy of a completely different kind and the communities he will be supporting are lucky to have him. Our thanks to Andrew for everything he's achieved on behalf of SCCL and we wish him all the very best.

"We look forward to continuing to work with the SCCL board and the new Chair to deliver The Quay Zone project and make sure it's a real success for the people and communities of Girvan and South Carrick."

Ken Johnstone, Acting Chair of SCCL, said: "Andrew has steered SCCL with a clear and steady hand and he'll be missed by all of us who have worked with him for so long. His passion and commitment to this project have kept things going – even during the tough times in the early years – and his desire to make The Quay Zone happen has been unwavering.

"Thanks to his efforts, we have achieved funding and support that only ever seemed like a dream at times and we are just a few short months away from the centre opening its doors and that dream turning into a reality.

"He will certainly be a very hard act to follow and the board's focus will be on ensuring the right person picks up the mantle and takes the lead to drive the project forward. We're moving into a whole new era for SCCL and The Quay Zone and the momentum built up during Andrew's stewardship will continue to grow stronger and stronger as we get closer to the doors opening for the first time."

Arrangements to appoint a new Chair for SCCL will be considered at the next board meeting on 13 July 2016.
