Bobble Hat or Bust, a short play specially written to highlight the importance of adult protection for the thousands of Scottish adults who suffer verbal, physical, sexual and financial abuse every day, was recently staged across South Ayrshire.
The play had a narrator and five characters who become involved in some situations, that will change their lives and they have to make some difficult decisions. The play dealt in a humorous but respectful way with adult support and protection issues.
Ann Clark, Chair of South Ayrshire's Adult Protection Committee, which includes representatives from South Ayrshire Council, Strathclyde Police, NHS Ayrshire & Arran and the private and voluntary sectors said: "The play was very powerful, it had a small cast who in a sensitive and fun way put across important information on adult protection.
"Some people came to see it because they had a professional interest, others because they thought they needed support and others purely because they were curious. It doesn't matter why they came it is just great that it was such a success and we spread the message across South Ayrshire that protecting adults in our communities is important.
"Members of the Adult Protection Committee appreciated the suggestions which they received from members of the public about protecting adults in our communities."
Councillor Nan McFarlane, South Ayrshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Social Services, said: "Finding new and interesting ways to get information across about adult protection issues is important and the Bobble Hat or Bust play certainly did that.
"We must look after all vulnerable adults in South Ayrshire. If you know someone who has mental health issues, learning difficulties, a dependency on drugs or alcohol, is physically frail or has some other issue in their life and needs extra support then please do what you can to make sure they get the right type of support."
Here is what some of the audience said:
"The play was a good way of getting the message across."
"The play was good and gave a good account of how people could be vulnerable."
