All South Ayrshire schools to open after Easter holidays

 15 April 2016  |

All South Ayrshire schools – including those constructed under South Ayrshire Council's public private partnership (PPP) with consortium Education 4 Ayrshire (E4A) – will reopen as planned after the Easter holidays on Monday 18 April 2016.

Two South Ayrshire secondary schools (Belmont and Prestwick Academies), three primaries (Alloway, Barassie and Monkton) and a school annexe at Kyle Academy in Ayr were built under PPP between 2007 and 2009.

Precautionary safety inspections – prompted by the closure of a number of schools in Edinburgh – were completed at the South Ayrshire schools this week while pupils were on holiday.

No issues have been found and the schools will now all reopen as planned on Monday.

Donald Gillies, South Ayrshire Council's Head of Property and Risk, said: "We take the safety of our school buildings very seriously and take pride in ensuring our children and young people have access to quality education facilities.

"Although our PPP schools were built by a different contractor to the one involved in the Edinburgh Schools Partnership, we wanted to ensure we could have confidence in the safety of our school estate and that's why we asked E4A to undertake these recent checks.

"I'm very pleased our schools can now all reopen as planned and we will continue to work closely with our PPP partners, whose swift response we very much appreciate this week.

"We'll also continue to invest in our own school estate through our dedicated capital programme of almost £85 million over the next five years, making sure we can deliver the quality learning and teaching our young people deserve in the best possible facilities."

The Council's PPP partners from E4A said: "We are pleased to report that our inspectors found no issues and the schools are safe to reopen as normal. We look forward to continuing our work with the Council to ensure that our schools estate provides the highest quality environment for learning and teaching."
