Youngsters go wild for books and reading

Big Wild Read

Big Wild Read

Libraries in South Ayrshire Council have been actively involved in a national campaign to encourage children to read and talk about books during the summer holidays.

Aimed mainly, but not exclusively, at 4 – 12 years olds, ‘The Big Wild Read’ proved immensely popular with this year’s theme focusing on environmental issues. Links were forged with the BBCs Breathing Places as well as with the Woodland Trust’s ‘Trees for all Campaign’ who will be planting one tree for every book children read.

Councillor Margaret Toner, portfolio carrier for Community Services said: “I am delighted that so many young readers came into the libraries in the summer to support this campaign.”

Councillor Toner continued: “The Big Wild Read is an excellent initiative and not only improves literacy levels, but also boosts confidence and self esteem by having the children talk about and express how the book made them feel.”

The Big Wild Read was the ninth National Summer Reading Challenge and children were encouraged to read at least six books, spurred on by a range of exciting incentives and activities. Library staff were on hand to offer support, encouragement and to suggest books to readers.

To mark their achievements and to say thank you for taking part, children across South Ayrshire were invited to presentation ceremonies at Troon, Girvan, and Ayr Carnegie Libraries. Here are some pictured receiving certificates and medals for all their efforts.
