Two South Ayrshire Children's Panel Members Retire
Jean Wilson and Jessie Nelson, two longstanding members of the South Ayrshire Children’s Panel have retired.
Members of the Panel gathered to say goodbye to their colleagues and South Ayrshire Council Provost Winifred Sloan presented each of the ladies with a bouquet of flowers to mark the occasion.
Provost Sloan said: “Jean has been involved in the Panel system since 2000 and Jessie since 1990. Both have worked tirelessly for the Children’s Hearing as members of the Children’s Panel Advisory Committee by appointing Panel members, supporting them and monitoring heargs. All the time working with children, parents, guardians and members of various professions to help children who need care and protection, or those who have got themselves into a spot of bother.
“They will both be greatly missed by other Panel members, who they have generously shared their knowledge and experience with over their many years of service to the community.”
Jean and Jessie were presented with a certificate by the Chair of the Panel to mark their years of service.
Jean Wilson joined the Children's Panel Advisory Committee in 2000. As well as being a member of the panel Jean is a prison visitor, works within a hospital and is a member of the Women's rural.
Jessie became a member of the Children’s Panel in North Ayrshire in 1990 and after leaving Panel member service in 1996 was appointed as a member of the Children’s Panel Advisory Committee in 1996.
The Children’s Hearing system, established in 1971, is a form of Juvenile Justice and Child Protection, which is unique to Scotland. Panel Members make informed decisions in the best interests of children after discussing each individual case along with the child, parents/guardian and interested professionals. Working on behalf of the community they make decisions about children who need care and protection, or those who offend.
Drawn from all sections of the community Panel Members represent most age groups, and this ensures a balanced Panel. No special technical or professional skills are required and those who are selected undergo training that will allow them to take part in the Children’s Hearing system.
Anyone over 18 years of age, with a genuine interest in the welfare of children, can apply to become a Panel Member. Attracting people from all walks of life is very important, so applicants require no qualifications, as successful applicants will receive appropriate training. People who apply to become Panel Members must be willing to give time, and commitment, and have a sincere interest in the welfare of children.
Anyone who would like further information about becoming a Panel Member should contact Alison Nelson on telephone number 01292 612462.
