Lorna Anderson, who plays Amber in the television drama River City, officially has officially opened the new extension in the South Ayrshire Council Day Centre in the Sheltered Housing Unit in Walker Avenue, Troon.

Before the extension the popular Day Centre could only hold eight people at a time and there was wasted space. Now an internal wall has been removed, a small office created and sixteen people can comfortably be together in the new space.

Councillor Margaret Toner, Portfolio Carrier for Community Services said: “The difference in the Day Centre is amazing, so many more residents and their visitors will be able to enjoy the facilities. The Day Centre has been specially altered to meet the needs of the tenants and a ramp has been installed to make access easier.

“The area is used for lots of things including a breakfast club every morning, bingo every Thursday, a lunch club on a Wednesday and for many other social gatherings.”

It was a very special day for the oldest resident, Catherine Fowlis who is 94 years of age, as she watched her granddaughter officially open the extension in the presence of Councillor Toner, South Ayrshire Council Provost Winifred Sloan, other residents who use the facility and Council employees.

Speaking about the Day Centre Lorna said: “My Gran lives here and I have been coming to the Centre since I was a child. I know that there are lots of activities here and that sometimes there was not enough room for everyone, so the extra space is great, I know that my Gran and others really appreciate it.”
