Mrs Chivas, who lives in north Ayr, won a £100 prize voucher to spend in Tesco after taking part in a South Ayrshire Council pilot project to encourage people to recycle more.

After selecting north Ayr as the area to carry out the pilot project 400 householders were sent a letter explaining how to take part. Mrs Chivas won the prize draw by correctly recycling her household waste in accordance with Council policy, putting her name and address in a glass bottle, and placing it in her black box with other glass out for recycling on the correct day.

When Council staff uplifted the householders waste and sorted the glass items at the kerbside they collected all the names and addresses that had been placed in bottles. All the names were placed in a box and a senior manager from Tesco randomly selected a winner.

Councillor Peter Convery, the Council’s Portfolio Carrier for Sustainability and Environment issues said: “It was my pleasure to present Mrs Chivas with her prize which I am sure that she will enjoy spending at Tesco. Our Council currently has the second highest annual recycling rate in Scotland, an achievement that has been made possible because residents and Council staff have worked together. It is important that we do not rest on our laurels and keep improving the percentage of waste that we recycle. I would like to thank Tesco for supporting the Council, encouraging people to recycle and meeting half the cost of the prize voucher.”

It is believed that this Council is the first in Scotland to pilot this type of household waste incentive scheme. This type of project has proved very successful in England at increasing recycling rates and it will be monitored and evaluated and may be extended to other parts of South Ayrshire.

There will be a £100 voucher to be won in north Ayr in February and in March. All householders in the north area of Ayr have to do is place their name and address in a glass bottle during these two months and place their black box at the kerbside for recycling on the correct day. If they are correctly recycling their household waste their name will be entered into the prize draw.
