Councillors Toner, MacFarlane and Hampton with the winning golfers

On Monday 4 August 2008 the Pre Handicap Open was played over Troon Fullarton Golf Course. This is an event for young golfers who have not yet obtained a handicap but can manage to play 18 short holes.

Each group was assisted round the course by a volunteer from a local golf club who helped the young golfers to mark their score cards and advised them about the rules and etiquette of golf.

All of the competitors received some complimentary golf accessories prior to teeing off thanks to the main sponsor of the event the Dunfermline Building Society and other sponsors that included Asda, Alastair Fleming (Citroen), Murraygolf and Wilson Sporting Goods.

Councillor Margaret Toner, Depute Leader of South Ayrshire Council said: "The standard of golf was excellent with many fine scores being returned. All the young golfers enjoyed taking part in the event and I know that it was a positive experience for them. I believe that many of these enthusiastic young people have the potential to be great golfers in years to come."

As the emphasis during the Pre Handicap Open was on the importance of participation trophies were awarded to the lowest score in six categories.

The results were:

BOYS 8, 9 and 10 YEARS Lee Fraser (Troon) and Fraser Rigby (Troon) both scored 78

BOYS 11 YEARS Allistair Smith (Troon) 72

BOYS 12 YEARS Sean McIntosh (Elie Sports Club) 67

BOYS 13 YEARS Thomas McCallum (East Kilbride) 72

BOYS 14 YEARS PLUS Arthur Longair (Ayr) 77

GIRLS Rebecca Morton (North Gailes) 87 

At the conclusion of play, the trophies were presented by Councillors Toner, MacFarlane and Hampton.
