South Ayrshire Council Provost Winifred Sloan looked cooler than usual when she showed her support for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association ‘Shades Day’ on 20 June 2008 by wearing her favourite sunglasses.
The aim of ‘Shades Day’ is to raise awareness of the harmful effects of the sun on your eyes and to let people know that by simply putting on a pair of sunglasses, sun visor or hat you can help to protect yourself against harmful UV sunlight. This simple action can help to reduce the risk of long term eye damage, eye conditions such as Age-related Macular Degeneration and cataracts, or potential sight loss.
Provost Sloan said: “Many of us take our eyesight for granted and forget how precious it is. I think ‘Shades Day’ is a fun way or reminding everyone to look after their eyes, sunglasses are a great fashion accessory, there is a style to suit everyone.
“The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association is committed to promoting eye care awareness and providing support and guidance for people who have little or no sight.”
Roy Hay and his Guide Dog Unis met the Provost and Councillor Mairi Low out in the sunshine on the steps of the County Buildings on ‘Shades Day’ to thank the Council for their support for ‘Shades Day’.
