Prestwick Oval Environmental Clean Up

The Oval in Prestwick is looking better than ever thanks to a group of local volunteers that have been working hard to improve the area. The enthusiastic group included local residents, local Councillors, members of the South Ayrshire Community Safety Partnership, representatives from Strathclyde Police and members of the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV).

The volunteers spent a day cleaning up the area by lifting and disposing of litter that had been dropped by thoughtless members of the public.

Councillor Margaret Toner, Chair of the South Ayrshire Community Safety Partnership said: “I would like to thank all the volunteers who gave up their precious leisure time, for their hard work had really made a difference to the Oval.

“I believe the key to tackling antisocial behaviour is teamwork, getting local people and different agencies involved, who all want to improve their environment by working in harmony together.

“This is just one of the exciting initiatives that will be taking place this summer at the Oval and I would encourage everyone to get involved in their local community activities.”

South Ayrshire Council Community Safety Partnership is keen to tackle antisocial behaviour using a ‘problem solving approach’, in this case litter at the Oval in Prestwick was amongst the problems. They identified the problem, organised a clean up and improved the area.

The Council provided equipment for the volunteers to pick up litter which Council employees then disposed of properly.

The Space Place opened their doors to the volunteers and made their facilities available to them during the clean up day.
