The land outside South Ayrshire Council’s sheltered housing complex in McConnell Square in Girvan, known by local people as Hillcrest, will be blooming with colour in the spring thanks to the efforts of the local community.

A group of pupils from Invergarven Primary School in Girvan joined members of the Council’s Neighbourhood Services team to help them plant 30,000 mixed crocus bulbs on Council housing land outside the sheltered housing complex.

Councillor Tom Slider, Chair of the Council’s Housing Panel took part in the planting as did other local Councillors. Councillor Slider said: “Council staff prepared the ground and the children threw the bulbs into position and helped to stamp down the soil around the bulbs. This was a real community project, and the children and the residents at the sheltered housing complex will be able to enjoy the great display of colour the crocuses will give next spring. I would like to congratulate the Housing staff and the Neighbourhood Services staff for all their hard work.”

Gardening can be thirsty work so the residents from Hillcrest invited the children , and others who took part in the planting, into the housing complex for refreshments after all their efforts.
