South Ayrshire Council has a brand new mobile library that will be travelling the length and breadth of South Ayrshire, taking books and much more to library users.

The new bus paid a visit to the County Buildings in Ayr so that Councillors could see for themselves the facilities the bus, that will soon become a well known sight in South Ayrshire, has to offer.

Councillor Margaret Toner, Depute Leader of the Council and Portfolio carrier for Community Services said: “The bus is very distinctive and is easily recognisable as it has the South Ayrshire logo on it. The vehicle is tremendous; it is light, airy and modern and will take services to library users who, for various reasons, cannot get to a library. I am particularly pleased that a bus has been selected that will be easy for people with additional support needs to get on and off. Library services are very important to people of all ages and I am sure that this bus will be very popular with clients.

The 7.5 tonne vehicle, that is capable of travelling on urban and rural roads, had many features including:

• Wide range of reading materials to suit all ages
• Internet access
• Access to Library Catalogue
• Heating
• Air conditioning
• A notice board
• A range of purpose built shelving
• Combined stairway and lift

David Murray, Assistant In Charge Mobile Library, will be driving the bus around South Ayrshire and providing any necessary assistance to people who want to use the mobile library facilities.

The Mobile Library Service is revising its routes and timetable to reflect current demand from library users. Library employees are keen to hear from past customers and anyone else who feel that a visit from the mobile library would be beneficial to them.
