South Ayrshire Council’s Masonhill Crematorium has been named as United Kingdom Crematorium of the Year 2007 in the National Cemetery of the Year Competition.
The annual competition is open to all British cemeteries, churchyards or crematoria. It is the only competition of its kind that recognises the high standards of such facilities.
On being told of the award Councillor Peter Convery, the Council’s Portfolio Carrier for Sustainability and Environment issues said: "I am very pleased that all the dedication, compassion and hardwork shown by the staff at the Crematorium, on a daily basis, has been marked with this prestigious national award."
Staff at the Crematorium submitted an application to be considered for the award. Following their submission a group of judges made unannounced visits to Masonhill Crematorium to see the facilities for themselves.
To mark the award the Council has been presented with a stunning slate plaque that will be permanently displayed at the Crematorium following a special ceremony later this year.
