Marrows Or Marigolds The Choice Is Yours

Troon Allotment Society is to rent a piece of land at Fullarton Woods in Troon from South Ayrshire Council, so that ‘greenfingered’ locals can tend and grow vegetables and plants on an allotment.

Councillor Bill McIntosh, the Council’s Portfolio Carrier for Resources and Performance said: “Gardening is a passion for many people, but not everyone is lucky enough to have a garden of their own, or maybe they just want more space.

“The allotments in Troon will provide a place for many people to grow anything from marrows to marigolds, from blackcurrants to brussels. More people than ever are keen to follow a healthier diet and to grow their own vegetables, and allotments are ideally suited to this. I am sure that there will be some people who use their allotment to grow flowers that will give them, and others hours of pleasure.

“Gardening is a healthy form of outdoor exercise for people of all ages and is a great opportunity for people to socialise. I would like to wish Troon Allotment Society and their members who work the allotment the best of luck with their planting.”

The Council was approached in May 2007 by a group of people from Troon interested in identifying local ground that was available and could be converted into allotments, and forming a Troon Allotment Society to run the scheme.

Members of the Council’s Leadership Panel agreed to lease the area of ground to the Troon Allotment Society for a period of 10 years. The tenancy agreement entered into by the Society will be subject to the Allotment Acts and the Council’s existing allotment rules and regulations.

Anyone who is interested in applying for an allotment should contact Karen McLure the Council’s Senior Landscape Officer on telephone number 01292 616671.
