Councillor Tom Slider, Chair of South Ayrshire Council’s Housing Panel has been out and about getting into training for the Conquer a Corbett 2008 Challenge. If he is successful Macmillan Cancer Care and their clients will benefit as Councillor Slider has asked people to sponsor his climb.

The Macmillan Corbett Challenge for 2008 is to have at least one person conquer every one of Scotland’s 219 Corbetts during May this year. Members of the Scottish Mountaineering Club are kindly providing all health and safety information that participants will need to stay safe during their climb.

Corbetts are between 2,500 and 2,999 feet high, smaller than Munros, but are still challenging climbs, they are spread throughout Scotland and there are some on the Western Isles.

Councillor Slider has chosen to climb Corserine, that is 814 metres high (2,660 feet) on 17 May this year, he said: “At the moment there are over a million people in the United Kingdom living with cancer and the statistics tell us that one in three of us will be diagnosed with cancer during our lives. Macmillan Cancer Care improves the lives of those affected by cancer, they help with all the things needed to give support, from specialist health care and information to practical, emotional and financial support.

“Every penny that I raise through taking part in this challenge will go directly to MacMillan Cancer Care. Council employees and other Councillors have been very quick to come forward and support me and I would like to thank them all for their generosity.”

Anybody who would like to sponsor Councillor Slider can donate by either logging on to www.justgiving.com/thomasslider or e-mail him direct at tom.slider@south-ayrshire.gov.uk
