A group of young people gave up their Sunday and travelled from all over South Ayrshire to take part in an event in the Walker Halls in Troon to celebrate the achievements of young people. As well as celebrating young people’s achievements the event gave those attending a chance to find out what projects other people in their age group are involved in by watching media clips of various youth groups in action. There was also a ‘Wall of Achievement’ that showed in pictures and text what others have achieved. A number of workshops were on offer including: Arts and Crafts – create and design a masterpiece. Samba Drums –learn a great new skill. Buggying –keep fit trying out a fast fund extreme sport. Wok this way –create healthy, tasty and economic dishes from around the world. Emergency services – meet the people in uniform who keep us safe on land and sea and watch real life demonstrations and rescues. Fast and Furious –sports with a twist. DJ skills – gain an insight into DJ’ing skills and working technical equipment. Love is the Drug – how drugs and alcohol can affect personal relationships. The Youth Forum and Youth Parliament elections took place that saw young people who are willing to give up their own time elected to represent the views of their peers in South Ayrshire. Councillor Margaret Toner, Depute Leader of the Council and Portfolio Carrier for Community Services presented awards to 53 young people for their contribution to, or their achievement in, their group or community . Speaking after the event Councillor Toner said: “I think it is very important that we celebrate the achievements of young people. All too often negative images of young people are portrayed and these are the exceptions rather than the norm. “I was very impressed with the young people I met who are all active citizens, care about their community and are willing to give up their free time to help improve it. The workshops were particularly interesting and covered a wide range of subjects.” After Councillor Toner presented the awards, to close the event, the dance workshop group of gave a performance to the sound of Samba ya Bamba.
