Ayrshire Archives Centre On The Move
The Ayrshire Archives Centre, situated in Craigie Estate in Ayr, will be closing its doors on 1 April 2008 and relocating to temporary premises at Auchincruive.
Councillor Margaret Toner, Depute Leader of South Ayrshire Council and Portfolio Carrier for Community Services said: “The Centre, which celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2006 provides a unique service that conserves and preserves Ayrshire’s unique records, that members of the public can access. The archives have ensured that customers have access to a growing number of local original resources that celebrate our past.
During the period of closure the materials usually available at the Ayrshire Archives Centre in Ayr will be prepared for transportation and then transferred to their temporary location. Regrettably, this will mean there will be no access to the records or provision of a remote enquiry service until the Archives Centre re-opens when usual service will be resumed.
Ayrshire Archives has three other access points at Irvine, Cumnock and Kilmarnock and these centres will remain open as usual. A number of records held at the Archives Centre in Ayr are available on microfilm at these points.
