Young people who took part in the National Team Read Challenge at Carnegie Library receive their prizes from Councillor Toner and Councilor Slider

During the summer months young people, in libraries across South Ayrshire, have been taking part in the 2008 National Summer Reading Challenge 'Team Read'.

To mark the reading achievements of children who took part in the challenge presentation ceremonies for the children and their families were held in Carnegie Library in Ayr, Troon Library, Girvan Library and Mossblown Library. Children were presented with certificates and a medal.

The aim of the Summer Reading Challenge was to get children to read six books from their local library. Children who took part were given a membership card and a special poster to keep track of the books they read.

Councillor Margaret Toner, Depute Leader of South Ayrshire Council and Portfolio Carrier for Community Services presented medals at the ceremony in Carnegie Library, she said: "It is so important that children are encouraged to improve their reading skills, and to keep on reading. There are so many books available in our libraries, there really is a book that will suit every child, whether they are interested in sports, history, fiction, picture books or music.

"I would like to thank the Librarians who acted as reading coaches for the children, advising them on their choice of books and helping them to achieve as much as possible from taking part in 'Team Read'.

Children across the United Kingdom took part in 'Team Read' in addition children from 28 different countries around the world took part making it a truly international event.
