Beautiful Scotland In Bloom Judges Visit Troon

People in Troon have been pulling out all the stops preparing for the arrival of the judges for the 2007 Beautiful Scotland competition.  The judges have now visited Troon to see the floral transformation that has taken place over the last year.

In 2006 Troon won a MERIT award in the 2006 Neighbourhood section of the competition, which automatically qualified Troon for entry into the Beautiful Scotland competition in 2007.

To prepare for this a project group was set up by Troon Community Council to work in partnership with South Ayrshire Council, Troon community and local business groups.  The project group has been responsible for the planning, co-ordination and presentation of the town to the visiting judges.

The judges received a colourful welcome as they were met in the foyer of the Town Hall in Troon, which had been decorated by the local Flower Club with displays created in the colours of the Troon Coat of Arms.

The South Ayrshire Council Provost, Winifred Sloan, along with other councillors, members of the Community Council, Troon Business Association, John Scott MSP and Officers from the Council welcomed the judges to Troon.

Provost Sloan said:  “I am very proud of what the people of Troon have achieved.  The town has been transformed with colourful banners, vibrant floral displays, gardens have been transformed and the project has drawn the community together.

“What the people of Troon have achieved truly reflects Civic Pride in action, and clearly demonstrates what can be achieved when we all work together.

“I hope that the judges were impressed by what they saw, but whatever they say I know that Troon is looking better than ever.  Local people and visitors to the area have been commenting on how nice it is to see the colourful banners and plants all around the town.  I hope that the people of Troon will be an inspiration to other towns and villages in South Ayrshire.”

Over the last year the project team has worked tirelessly to improve the visual impact of the town with floral displays and creative planting.  The team have battled against the elements this year as the weather has been very changeable with hot sunshine one minute and torrential rain the next.

Local schoolchildren have been heavily involved in the project, designing school banners that have created avenues of welcoming colour in the town.  Businesses and social organisations have also created banners that can be seen around the town, and are already designing new banners for next year.

School pupils have designed and planted floral tubs in their school colours further enhancing the environment in Troon for locals and visitors to the area.  A Troon Heritage exhibition, created by the towns primary schools that traces the journey of the town, can be viewed in the foyer of the Walker Halls each morning until the end of the summer season.

The judges spent two hours in Troon assessing the town, but everyone will have to wait to find out what they thought until the results of the competition are announced.   During their extensive tour the judges saw, amongst other things:

  1. Displays in the town centre.
  2. The recycling plant.
  3. Troon Portland Bowling Club.
  4. Troon Bowling Club
  5. Troon Railway Station.
  6. Church gardens.
  7. The Youth Centre in St. Meddans Street.
  8. Gardens in Troon where they spoke to local gardeners and local residents.
  9. Adam Wood Garden Project

Ann McAllister from Troon in Bloom project team said:  “We would like to thank South Ayrshire Council for all their support and in particular Ken Sinclair and his dedicated team. The support of the Council has been invaluable in presenting the town for judging.  The project has been so successful because of the hard work and dedication of local people of all ages who joined in with such enthusiasm and worked with the project team, Troon Community Council, Troon Business Association, local organisations and the Council.  People have enjoyed the project so much that plans are already in place to continue the enhancement of the town for 2008.”

Provost Winifred Sloan, members of the project team, Troon Community Council, Troon Business Association, local Councillors, local MSP and Officers of the Council welcomed the judges to Troon.
