Keep Up The Good Work - After Recycle Week 2007

During Recycle Week 2007 South Ayrshire residents were encouraged to get further involved in recycling household waste.

The week long event, that was supported by the Scottish Waste Awareness Group (SWAG), hopefully inspired many people to look carefully at their household waste.  It aimed to get people to look at their waste and really think about it and consider if it could possibly be used again instead of throwing it out.  It also aimed to get people to pledge to have a long term commitment to continue recycling.

Councillor Peter Convery, South Ayrshire Council’s Portfolio Carrier for Sustainability and Environment issues said:  “The Scottish Government has given all Scottish local authorities targets to meet, and they have the power to fine authorities that do not meet them.  So anything that can be done to encourage more people to reduce, reuse or recycle waste will help to protect the environment, keep down Council costs and let future residents and visitors to South Ayrshire enjoy our landscape.

“Thanks to the recycling efforts of our residents in South Ayrshire 36% of our waste was diverted away from landfill sites between April 2005 and April 2006.  Much of the waste has been recycled into a variety of products.”

Recycling across Scotland is on the increase with 81% of the Scottish public now  actively participating in some form of recycling.
