Provost Welcomes Young People From Belarus

South Ayrshire Council Provost Winifred Sloan met a group of young people from the Republic of Belarus, when they visited the County Buildings in Ayr.

The Scottish Action Ministries Chernobyl Relief organisation arranged the visit to Scotland.  They have organised lots of activities to make sure the visitors from the Chernobyl affected areas of Belarus enjoy their visit.   Some of the young people have health problems, so during their respite visit arrangements have been made for suitably qualified volunteers to carry out for free health checks.

The young people will be staying with local people who have offered to open their homes to them and look after them.

Provost Sloan hosted a reception for the visitors from Belarus, she said:  “It is very humbling to meet these young people who have been through so much in their young lives.  They are having fun and gaining the benefits of relaxing and mixing with families in Scotland.  Hopefully this break will be good for them physically and mentally and give them some great memories of Scotland.”

Every young person at the reception was given a ‘goodie’ bag by the Provost and Westsound also donated ‘goodie’ bags.

The Scottish Action Ministries Charity Relief has been bringing children from Belarus to Scotland for many years.  Members of the team also give up their time to go to Belarus and build hospitals, orphanages and other buildings.
