WARM TRIBUTES PAID TO SOUTH AYRSHIRE’S TOP COP

Glowing tributes were paid to a senior Strathclyde police officer when a civic reception, hosted by South Ayrshire Provost Winifred Sloan, was held recently in his honour.

Superintendent Bruce Kennedy, the top policeman in South Ayrshire, is leaving his King Street, Ayr, office, to take up a post undertaking special project work on behalf of the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland.

In recognition of his service, South Ayrshire Council held a special civic reception at the County Buildings, Ayr.

The guests included members of Superintendent Kennedy’s family, including his wife, mother and daughter; fellow police officers, including two Assistant Chief Constables, and representatives from South Ayrshire Council, including the Leader of the Council, Councillor Gibson T. Macdonald; Chief Executive, Tom Cairns and Councillor Douglas Campbell>, Leader of the Minority Group, and Chair of the South Ayrshire Licensing Board.

Provost Sloan spoke in appreciation of Superintendent Kennedy’s “outstanding service” with Strathclyde Police, and related to the gathered guests “how very well respected and well liked” he had been by the officers who had served him loyally in South Ayrshire.

The Provost told Superintendent Kennedy: “We are paying tribute to the outstanding work that you have carried out in South Ayrshire.  But I am sure that you would be the first to say, that ALL the Police Officers who serve in this area deserve our praise  - praise for their dedication, bravery, determination and the  way that they care for the community.”

Superintendent Kennedy began his police service in 1977 in Partick, Glasgow, where he remained until 1984 when he was made a Detective  and transferred to Paisley. After a spell with the Scottish Crime Squad, his first posting to South Ayrshire came in 1990 when he was promoted to Sergeant at Ayr Police Office.

Later he served as a uniformed Inspector and then Detective Inspector at Govan. In 1998 he was promoted to Chief Inspector, as the Events Planning Officer for Strathclyde Police, where he was responsible for planning events such the Labour Party Conference, the Sitting of the Scottish Parliament in Glasgow, and numerous Royal and VIP visits. In 2001 he was transferred to Ayr where the planning of major events continued, and included The Open at Troon in 2004, and the arrival of the G8 Leaders at Prestwick Airport last year.

He was promoted to Superintendent in 2004

A highlight of the civic reception was when Superintendent Kennedy was presented with an inscribed decanter and glasses by the Provost, and Superintendent Kennedy’s wife, Mrs Carol Kennedy was presented with a bouquet of flowers.
