MAJOR SEWER IMPROVEMENT PROJECT IN TROON
Scottish Water has embarked on a major sewer improvement project to relieve a troublesome flooding risk to the town of Troon. South Ayrshire Councillor Peter Convery said: “I am absolutely delighted that Scottish Water have responded to this serious problem. Over a number of months I have worked closely with them to have this vital work prioritised. They have dealt with this professionally and promptly throughout and I am very much looking forward to both phases of the project being completed. The number of bursts in Troon over the last few years have put added pressure on to the pipes in other areas. The improved sewers will both benefit the people of Troon and also ensure reliability of service for Prestwick residents.” Almost £2 million is being invested to improve 5 kilometres of sewer in the area to alleviate the problem of continued bursts and flooding to the historic town. Initially 3 kilometres of sewer will be improved between Craigend Road at Lochgreen Golf Course and to Marr College at Kilmarnock Road. In January 2007 further work will begin to improve the remaining 2 kilometres of sewer between Lochgreen Golf Course and the entrance to St Andrews Caravan Park. The work is due to be completed in March 2007 and is a major boost to the area after years of flooding problems because of regular bursts to the ageing infrastructure. Engineers will be using the latest techniques, which includes sliplining the new sewer pipes through the existing ones, to complete the work as quickly as possible and ensure disruption for locals is kept to a minimum. Lane closures or diversions are not anticipated so the projects should not affect traffic movement in the area. Councillor Peter Convery added: “Scottish Water has been in constant contact with both myself, the Council and Troon Community Council and has worked hard to keep everyone involved updated of developments.” Dawn McDermott, business and community liaison manager for Scottish Water, said: “We are delighted to be starting work on these projects which will alleviate the flooding problems experienced in the area over recent years. “The construction work should not have any impact on the day to day lives of local residents or businesses but should they require more information on the projects I would urge them to contact Scottish Water.” Anyone who would like further information about the project should contact the Scottish Water Customer Helpline on 0845 601 8855.
