PROVOST SLOAN PRESENTS 2006 MACLAURIN AWARDS

South Ayrshire Provost Winifred Sloan presented awards to young people whose work has been selected to feature in the 2007 Maclaurin Art Exhibition calendar at a ceremony held within the gallery.

The Maclaurin Art Exhibition is an annual exhibition that originated in 1977 to give young people the opportunity to show in a gallery setting the wide range of artwork created in schools.

The Maclaurin Trust, in association with South Ayrshire Council, supports the exhibition and the presentation of awards to 12 young artists, whose work is selected for the 2007 Maclaurin Art Exhibition Calendar.

Speaking about the exhibition Provost Sloan said:  “The artwork that the students have produced is very inspiring, each piece is unique.  Talking to the young artists they all seem to have enjoyed themselves while they were creating their exhibits.

“I would like to congratulate each of the students that I presented an award to, and in particular to Rachel Nicolson, aged 5, from Girvan Primary School who received the Maclaurin Award for her wax resist painting entitled simply ‘Me’.

“I look forward to seeing the calendar on display in offices and public places across South Ayrshire in 2007.”

The 2006 exhibition contains over 1,000 exhibits featuring drawings, paintings, craft and group work by young people aged from pre-school to senior secondary school.  This year 49 schools have participated in the exhibition and the work on show reflects the high standard and creative input within schools in South Ayrshire.  There are examples of expressive free painting by pre-5’s and studies by senior art pupils on a wide range of subject matter.  Various types of media such as paints, paper, clay, textiles and computer aided imaging have been used to create exhibits.

“The 2007 Maclaurin Art Exhibition Calendar will feature 12 works selected from the current exhibition.  The Maclaurin Trust will produce the calendar for distribution in late autumn to schools and other organisations in South Ayrshire.

The exhibition will be open until 4 June 2006 on Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and on Sunday from 2 pm to 5 pm.

Anyone who would like further information about the exhibition should contact Maclaurin Galleries, Rozelle Park, Ayr KA7 4NQ, telephone number 01292 443708, fax number 01292 442065 or e-mail
