THE LEARNING SHOP - MAKING A BIG DIFFERENCE

Some people cannot read and write as well as they would like to, but if they drop into the South Ayrshire Council Learning Shop in Ayr staff will show them how to improve their skills, and give them support.

Anyone who gets out of the habit of reading and writing can quickly find that they become a slow reader, this embarrasses them, then they make mistakes, lose concentration, misunderstand what they are reading and then they feel terrible.

One in five people in Scotland have poor reading and writing skills which hold them back at work, in their social life and generally makes simple tasks like shopping or following instructions difficult to do.

The Council provide a FREE Adult Learning service where people who have lost their confidence with reading, writing and counting can get FREE one-to-one help.  Adult Learning can also help people with simple computing skills.

Even if you are struggling to read this article there are things that you can do to help other people.  If you know someone who needs help from the Adult Learning Service put them in touch with someone who can help, or make an enquiry for them.

If you easily read this information then you could volunteer to be an Adult Learning Tutor. All you need are good basic skills in English and Arithmetic, if you have computer skills fine but they are not essential.  If you become a volunteer you will get 25 hours on free tutor training and support from a development worker when you are working with students.  So, if you have a couple of spare hours a week you could help someone to regain their skills and their confidence, which would make a huge difference to their life and you will get satisfaction from watching them progress.

Interested?  The next course for Tutor Training starts on Thursday, 28 September at 9.30 am in Ayr College.  If you want to help a friend or whether you would like to volunteer as a tutor just freephone the Adult Learning Team on 0800 3898320 or drop into the Learning Shop at 2 New Bridge Street, Ayr.
